Digital Convergence Podcast — Shout Out About “Breaking Into TV News”

A few weeks ago I posted about walking my dogs and listening to my favorite podcast — The Digital Convergence Podcast, about DSLR cameras and digital editing — and hearing the host Carl Olson read an e-mail that I’d sent and put a plug in for Naked Filmmaking: How To Make A Feature-Length Film – Without A Crew – For $10,000 Or Less.

This afternoon I was driving on assignment for KCRA and listening to this week’s podcast — Episode #68 — when half-way through it Carl Olson made a reference to the new book Breaking Into TV News – How To Get A Job & Excel As A TV News Reporter-Photographer and got a discussion going to a question I had asked about Adobe Premier Vs. Avid Media Composer. This lead to a lengthy discussion about the state of professional digital editing today, in the wake of the Final Cut Pro X release, by co-host Chris Fenwick. After this, Chris went on to mention Naked Filmmaking and referred to fellow co-host Mitch Aunger of Planet5D.com, who has just completed a Canon 5D MkIII short film.

I almost had to pull off to the side of the road, I was in such a state of shock. I had no idea this was going to come up.

The Digital Convergence Podcast is about how DSLR cameras are merging still photography and filmmaking, since cameras like the Canon 5D Mk II & III and the Canon 7D, and the Nikon cameras are all capable of shooting both amazing still photographs in addition to being able to shoot High-Definition video. I’ve really grown to look forward to this program every week, which records on Wednesday mornings and I tend to listen to on Thursdays when out walking our greyhounds.

The show is comprised of host Carl Olson, a commercial still & video photographer based in Atlanta, Georgia, and Mitch Aunger, who operates the Planet5D.com website, the premiere DSLR site on the Internet, and is based in my hometown of St. Louis, Missouri, and Chris Fenwick, a professional video editor based in San Francisco, and who also has one of the coolest editing websites at chrisfenwick.com.

Later, I went to The Digital Convergence Podcast website and was further astounded to find this huge plug at the bottom for Breaking Into TV News – How To Get A Job & Excel As A TV News Reporter-Photographer.

Many, many, many thanks to Carl, Chris & Mitch!
