“Breaking Into TV News”–All Done! And Two Weeks Of Vacation

I can’t remember when, if ever, I’ve taken two weeks off and didn’t go any place. Believe this is now referred to as a “Stay-cation.” The time off was necessary because I’d built up so much time at work that if I didn’t use it, I would lose it. Hmm. . . . Whattaya gonna do? The first few days were spent putting the finishing touches on the Kindle Edition of the new book Breaking Into TV News – How To Get A Job & Excel As A TV Reporter-Photographer. Making a Kindle version of your book is extremely...

You Know You’re A Dog Person When…

You know you’ve become a total dog owner when you finish a loaf of bread, then hold up the plastic bag you were just about to toss in the recycle container  and think, “Hmm. . . . I could scoop up a couple of poops into this.” For more on greyhounds and information on fostering, please visit my wife Bonnie’s blog bonniesgreyhounds.com. Apologies to my regular visitors for not posting anything in a while. Can only promise you that I’ve been busy, busy, busy. Major announcement coming in next few days. Please stay posted. My best to you all...

Bonnie’s Greyhounds – My Wife’s New Site On The Web

Bonnie’s Greyhounds – My Wife’s New Site On The Web

My wife Bonnie’s passion for our greyhounds Alex and Ava, and for our first greyhound Lola, is so full and deep. She has fallen head over heels for this breed. Now that she is fully retired she has taken to sharing her time to fostering greyhounds that need a little bit more socialization (and manners) before they can be adopted into their forever homes. She has written beautiful and lengthy e-mail updates about the progress of these dogs, as well as anecdotes about antics that our pair will do, and many times these tales have wound up in the...

Christmas Is Upon Us

Christmas Is Upon Us

The Christmas Season is officially here. Known as “Black Friday,” the first day after Thanksgiving when all the stores are mad with super-low one-day sales and the public turns into shopping zombies to get deals for Christmas gifts. Personally, I just go to Amazon where you can get the same kind of shopping bargains all the time — and not have to pay the sales tax. But then I suppose that I am one of the statics adding to the demise of the brick & mortar stores. To be honest, I have to confess to being a little slow...

Morning Light & Color – Walking Hollywood Park

Morning Light & Color – Walking Hollywood Park

As much as I’d like to stay in bed and keep warm on these increasingly chillier autumn mornings, duty calls. In this case, walking the dogs. As I’ve posted in the past, for those who’ve been following this site, my wife Bonnie and I have two retired greyhounds, Alex and Ava, ages 5 and 7 respectfully. They led lives as working dogs so retirement has not come easily to them. So every morning they rise with the sun and need to go to work, meaning one of us has to throw on some clothes and head out the door...

Salton Sea on KCRA-TV

Salton Sea on KCRA-TV

This is our vacation home movie. Most people put some videos together, post them on Youtube or burn DVDs and mail them to family. I write up a script, edit my videos and have them broadcast on a network affiliate. Yes, I put my vacation photos and videos out on the news. This story aired on KCRA-TV’s Common Ground at 6:30 PM on Sunday, May 15, 2011. hb129 from Mike Carroll on Vimeo. As a continuation from the two earlier posts about our trip to Southern California and the Salton Sea: Just over a month ago Bonnie, Alex, Ava...

On The Road – Part Two, The Salton Sea

On The Road – Part Two, The Salton Sea

The Salton Sea is a photographer’s Disneyland. A desert lake. Barren, harsh and beautiful. Not so much natural as unnatural. Located thirty miles south of Indio, which is just next to Palm Springs, the Salton Sea is 229 feet below sea level. (Technical Note: I’m going to go into greater detail on the shooting of these photos in a few weeks. Later in the morning I started shooting from a tripod and shooting both stills and video of the same thing. I have an idea for what I’m going to do with it, but am going to go into...

On The Road – Part One: Heading South

On The Road – Part One: Heading South

These next two postings are going to be very much on the personal side: family vacation. Bonnie and I on the road with our family of two rescued greyhounds, Alex and Ava. Bonnie and I haven’t taken a vacation anywhere on our own since we got together in 1997. In the interim we’ve been to St. Louis where my family is, or was at that time, and New York City, home to her daughter Lori, who starred in our film Nightbeats, and her son Sam. I’ve loved those trips, wandering and discovering NYC, but we’ve long yearned to do...
